The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the most iconic mammals of the Scottish Highlands, widely associated with remote landscapes such as Torridon in the Northwest Highlands. These environments provide a mix of open grazing and natural cover, supporting long-established populations. Male deer, known as stags or harts, are distinguished by their antlers, which are shed and regrown each year, initially covered in soft velvet during their development.
A stag stands within a patch of rough grass and low vegetation, its body angled across the frame while its head turns slightly toward the viewer. The warm tones of its coat contrast against the cooler greens of the hillside, while the velvet-covered antlers create a smooth, sculptural outline. Rocks and uneven ground in the background add texture and context, while the shallow depth of field keeps attention on the animal.
