The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal found across rivers, lakes, and coastal areas throughout the UK and much of Europe. Once in decline due to pollution and habitat loss, it has made a strong recovery in many regions. Adapted for life in water, it has dense, insulating fur, powerful swimming ability, and feeds mainly on fish, amphibians, and other aquatic prey.
Standing in shallow water among smooth pebbles, the otter holds its catch firmly in its mouth. Its body is slightly hunched as it steadies itself on the uneven riverbed, while the surrounding stones and larger rocks frame the scene. The textured setting and clear detail in the fur and whiskers emphasise the practical, foraging behaviour within a natural river environment.
