The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal found across rivers, lakes, and coastal areas throughout the UK and much of Europe. After significant declines in the past due to pollution and habitat loss, conservation efforts have supported a steady recovery in many regions. Otters are well adapted to life in water, with dense insulating fur, strong swimming ability, and a diet mainly consisting of fish and other aquatic prey.
Leaning forward at the water’s edge, the otter lowers its head to drink, its body angled down across a bed of pale stones. The still surface reflects its face and upper body, creating a soft mirror image beneath. The composition balances the animal with its reflection, while the surrounding textures of rock and water keep the scene natural and uncluttered.
