The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal found across rivers, lakes, and coastal areas throughout the UK and much of Europe. After significant declines in the past due to pollution and habitat loss, populations have been steadily recovering. Otters are well adapted to life in water, with dense, water-repellent fur, strong swimming ability, and a diet that mainly consists of fish, amphibians, and other aquatic prey.
Resting on a flat surface, the otter uses its front paws to hold and eat its food, displaying a dexterous, almost hand-like grip. Its head is lowered in concentration, with whiskers and muzzle clearly defined, while the surrounding ground and a discarded shell add context to the feeding behaviour. The close composition highlights fine detail and texture, focusing attention on the action.
