Native to the Indian subcontinent, they get their name from the Hindi word magar, meaning water monster. With a broad snout and a preference for slow-moving rivers, lakes, and marshes, muggers spend a lot of time basking or quietly floating, waiting for prey. Despite their fearsome appearance, they play a vital role in their ecosystems and have even been seen using tools to lure birds. Clever and ancient, these reptiles have been around in some form for over 200 million years!
