The Monastery of Batalha is one of Portugal’s most important Gothic landmarks, built in the late 14th century to commemorate the country’s victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. Commissioned by King João I, it became a symbol of national identity and independence, as well as a showcase of intricate stone craftsmanship. Over time, elements of Manueline design were added, creating a richly detailed structure that reflects both historical significance and artistic ambition.
