The glasswing butterfly (Greta oto) is a species found in Central and South America, known for its remarkable transparent wings. Unlike most butterflies, the wing tissue lacks the coloured scales that usually give butterflies their patterns, allowing light to pass through and creating a near-invisible effect in flight. This transparency provides a form of camouflage, helping it blend into its surroundings and avoid predators.
Perched lightly on a leaf, the butterfly is shown side-on, its delicate wings revealing fine vein structures against a soft green background.
