Conisbrough Castle, near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, dates from the late 11th century and is one of the most distinctive Norman castles in England. Its circular keep is an unusual design, reflecting advanced defensive planning, while the surrounding curtain walls and ruins hint at the scale of the original complex. Built by the de Warenne family, the castle later became part of England’s medieval power structure and has remained a prominent landmark within the landscape ever since.
The ruins sit atop a grassy rise, with a low stone wall in the foreground leading the eye toward the castle. Bright daylight and scattered cloud illuminate the stonework, while the open sky and surrounding greenery create a balanced and spacious composition.
