Mayburgh Henge, located at Eamont Bridge near Penrith in Cumbria, is one of the largest prehistoric monuments of its kind in Britain. Unlike many henges, it is formed from a massive bank of river stones rather than earth, enclosing a single standing stone at its centre. Thought to date from the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age, with possible later use into the Iron Age, its exact purpose remains uncertain. It is often considered part of a wider ceremonial landscape in the Eden Valley, reflecting the importance of ritual and gathering in prehistoric Britain.
A single standing stone rises from open grassland, framed by two mature trees under a clear blue sky. Warm evening light casts long shadows across the ground, highlighting the texture of the stone and the gentle contours of the surrounding landscape.
