Jane’s Tower in the Sound of Harris, Outer Hebrides, is one of several small navigational markers whose names trace back to 19th and early 20th century Royal Navy surveys of the area. The origins of its name are often linked to a surveyor’s personal connection, said to reference a girlfriend, adding a touch of local folklore to an otherwise practical structure. Stories also suggest a bottle of whisky may be sealed within its base, reflecting the blend of maritime function and human character that defines much of the region’s coastal history.
