Found sunbathing across Greece and the eastern Med, the starred agama (Stellagama stellio), also known as the roughtail rock agama, are little show-offs famous for their impressive colours and even more impressive attitude. Males especially love to puff up their throats and nod their heads when trying to look important - like tiny reptilian bodybuilders. Agamas can change colour slightly depending on their mood or the temperature, and they're brilliantly adapted to rocky, sun-blasted places like Agia Agathi Beach. You'll often spot them flattening themselves on warm stone, pretending to be casual, while keeping one eye fixed right on you. Sassy, ancient, and unbothered - they're lizards with presence.
Caught in full profile and sitting like he owns the place, this starred agama shows off his sandy yellow tones against a sunlit rock. There’s something regal about his pose - a sort of lizardy confidence, like he's just finished a long speech about territory and sun rights.
