Cockle shells are a familiar feature of tidal flats and sandy shores around the UK, particularly in sheltered coastal areas where fine sediment allows them to thrive. These small bivalves live buried beneath the surface, feeding on microscopic organisms filtered from the water. When tides recede, empty shells are often left scattered alongside seaweed and other marine debris, forming natural arrangements shaped by waves, currents, and feeding activity from coastal birds. Over time, these elements become part of the ever-changing texture of the shoreline.
A cluster of cockle shells lies partially embedded in wet sand, surrounded by small pieces of seaweed and shallow water. Soft light reflects off the damp surface, highlighting the pale tones of the shells and the subtle green of the seaweed.
