ABOUT THE IMAGE
Strumble Head Lighthouse stands on Ynysmeicl (St. Michael's Island), an islet to the west of Fishguard, Wales.
The station was built to help guide sea traffic between Ireland and Fishguard Harbour, located three miles to the east - this stretch of coast is very dangerous, and some 60 vessels are known to have been lost along it in the 19th Century alone. It was converted to unmanned automatic operation in 1980.
