The deer statues at Mandraki Harbour are among the best-known symbols of Rhodes. Standing on tall stone columns, the stag and doe (known locally as Elafos and Elafina) are said to mark the spot where the legendary Colossus of Rhodes once stood - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. While there's no real evidence the Colossus actually straddled the harbour, it's a fun bit of myth to go with the view. These modern statues welcome visitors arriving by boat and have come to represent the island's quiet pride and natural beauty. Whether you believe the legends or not, there's no denying they look fantastic framed against a clear blue sky.
This shot shows both deer statues with the fortress and lighthouse beyond, all set under a flawless sky. It's one of those scenes where history, myth and beauty come together.
