The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the most iconic native mammals of the Scottish Highlands, with stags often associated with remote glens and open hillsides. Torridon, in the Northwest Highlands, is well known for its rugged landscapes and long-established deer populations, where these animals have adapted to the exposed terrain and shifting weather conditions. Mature males, or harts, are recognised by their antlers, which are shed and regrown annually, growing larger and more complex with age.
In this image, a stag emerges partially from dense green vegetation, with only its head and upper body visible above the foreground foliage. Its developing antlers, still covered in soft velvet, curve outward with a smooth, rounded texture.
