The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the most recognisable mammals of the Scottish Highlands, often found across open hillsides and glens such as those around Torridon in the Northwest Highlands. These landscapes provide ideal habitat, with a mix of rough grazing and shelter. Male deer, known as stags or harts, develop antlers each year, initially covered in soft velvet as they grow before hardening ahead of the autumn rut.
In this image, the stag stands broadside within tall grasses, its full body visible against a softly blurred green backdrop.
