Dùn Èistean, on the north east coast of the Isle of Lewis near the village of Knockaird in the Outer Hebrides, is a site layered with history spanning several periods. Archaeological evidence suggests occupation from at least the Iron Age, with later use continuing into the medieval era. The headland, once more isolated than it appears today, offered natural defensive advantages and a commanding view over the surrounding sea. Remains found here point to settlement, conflict, and strategic use, making it one of the more intriguing historic coastal locations in the Hebrides.
A small stone cairn stands on the grassy cliff edge, set against a backdrop of deep blue sea and rugged rock formations. Clear light sharpens the textures of stone and turf, while the open horizon draws the eye outward across the water.
