Dùn Èistean, on the north east coast of the Isle of Lewis near Knockaird in the Outer Hebrides, is a place shaped by centuries of human presence and the surrounding Atlantic. This multi-period archaeological site shows evidence of Iron Age occupation through to later medieval use, with its coastal position offering both defence and access to the sea. The headland’s rugged geology and exposed setting reflect the same forces that influenced those who lived here, where survival depended on understanding both land and water.
From the grassy cliff edge, the view opens out across clear blue water toward a rocky outcrop jutting into the sea. The contrast between bright green foreground and vivid turquoise shallows draws the eye, while seabirds scattered across the sky add movement to the open coastal scene.
