Floating just off the coast of Kos, near Agios Stefanos Beach, it's home to the tiny chapel of Aghios Nikolaos and not much else - unless you count the wild thyme and a few goats. Locals say the island was formed from a volcanic eruption long ago, and its rocky silhouette with that dramatic central outcrop makes it one of the most photographed spots on the island. Boats can glide right up to its shore, but many visitors still prefer to swim over from the beach. It's not just about ticking off a landmark, either - Kastri has a peaceful, otherworldly feel that people remember long after the sand's out of their shoes.
