Meet the elegant red-crested pochard - or more specifically, the more understated but no less beautiful female of the species. While the males sport bold red beaks and dramatic crests, the females are more subtly coloured in warm browns and soft greys - perfect for blending in among reeds and water plants.
These freshwater ducks are commonly found in Europe and Asia, and they love a peaceful paddle across calm lakes and ponds. They’re dabbling ducks, which means they feed mostly by tipping forward to nibble at plants just beneath the surface.
