Durham Castle in County Durham, England is a Norman fortress dating back to the 11th century, originally built to defend the region following the Norman Conquest. Over time, it evolved from a military stronghold into a place of residence and learning, and since 1840 it has been continuously occupied by University College, part of Durham University.
