Shawbost Norse Mill & Kiln is a reconstructed example of a traditional corn mill, based on an Iron Age design that once existed on this site. It remains the only working example of this type of mill in the Western Isles, offering insight into early methods of grain processing and the ingenuity of early communities in adapting to their environment.
The mill and kiln sit low within the landscape, their turf-covered roofs blending into the surrounding grassland. The stone walls and simple doorway provide contrast against the softer greens, while open water and distant ground create a sense of space. The composition emphasises the relationship between structure and setting, capturing both history and landscape.

Each canvas is stretched over a solid wooden frame made from European kiln-dried knotless pine. The stretcher bars are milled with a curved profile that minimises contact with the canvas surface, helping to prevent impression marks and allowing the artwork to remain smooth and evenly tensioned.
The frame features finger-jointed corners to maintain structural strength and resist warping over time. For larger sizes, discreet tensioning wedges are added to the corners, allowing the canvas to remain taut and making future adjustment possible if required.
Every canvas is hand finished by experienced framers, ensuring clean folds and precise stretching on each corner. The 38mm deep frame gives the artwork a strong wall presence, while a choice of black, white or image wrap edges allows the final presentation to suit your space.
Stretched canvases are designed to hang directly from the wooden stretcher frame, allowing the artwork to sit flush against the wall for a clean, gallery-style finish. Simply place a nail or screw into the wall and rest the frame over it. For larger canvases, two fixings positioned either side of the centre stretcher bar provide additional stability.
