Next time you're peacefully munching toast, spare a thought for the seals...
I'd dragged myself out of bed at stupid-o'clock to catch the sunrise at Portmellon Cove in Cornwall. The light was turning that perfect peach colour when I spotted movement in the next cove - two harbour seals having their own breakfast meeting.
One of them had only gone and caught an absolute monster of a fish. Within minutes the local gull gang clocked it and turned into feathered pirates. They swooped, squawked, and one got a bit too cocky - nearly ending up as the second course! (See the photo where the seal looks like it's saying 'come any closer and you're next').
I stood there grinning like an idiot for a full 15 minutes while the seal casually demolished its breakfast, gave the gulls a death stare, took one last gulp and slid off round the headland like nothing had happened.
Thank goodness for the 600mm lens - the seal was a good 500 metres away. Without it I'd have come home with lovely photos of... a black blob.
