The fallow deer, though originally native to the eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, has become an iconic part of the English countryside, having been introduced by the Romans and successfully re-established by the Normans around the 11th century for hunting in deer parks.
Renowned for their elegant spotted coats - typically chestnut with white spots in summer - and the distinctive broad, palmate antlers of mature bucks, they are the most widespread and numerous deer species in England today, thriving in mixed woodlands, parks, and open fields.
