Sea Squill (Drimia maritima) might look like it belongs in a sci-fi film, but it's very much part of Mediterranean tradition. Poking up through the dry, cracked earth in late summer, it flowers when everything else has given up - a botanical drama queen, if you like. The Ancient Greeks thought it had magical powers: they'd hang the bulbs on doorways to ward off evil spirits, sort of like a garlicky security system. Farmers have long used it to mark planting seasons, and its massive underground bulb can live for decades. You'll often find it growing in the wild, looking a bit like a gangly candle that's wandered off. No leaves, just a tall spike with clusters of white flowers - stubbornly beautiful and totally unbothered by the heat.
This particular patch of sea squill was growing along the rugged coast of Rhodes, Greece - a place where the air smells faintly of salt and thyme, and the ground crunches underfoot. I spotted it pushing defiantly through the dust, all delicate flowers and quiet confidence. It's a bit of a metaphor, really.
