Sea Squill (Drimia maritima) might look like it belongs in a sci-fi film, but it's very much part of Mediterranean tradition. Poking up through the dry, cracked earth in late summer, it flowers when everything else has given up - a botanical drama queen, if you like. The Ancient Greeks thought it had magical powers: they'd hang the bulbs on doorways to ward off evil spirits, sort of like a garlicky security system. Farmers have long used it to mark planting seasons, and its massive underground bulb can live for decades.
