The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal found across rivers, lakes, and coastal areas throughout the UK and much of Europe. After significant declines in the 20th century due to pollution and habitat loss, conservation efforts have supported a steady recovery in many regions. Otters are highly adapted to life in water, with dense insulating fur, strong swimming ability, and a diet that mainly consists of fish and other aquatic prey.
Resting on a rock at the edge of shallow water, the otter turns its head toward the viewer, giving a clear and direct expression. Its sleek brown coat contrasts with the pale stones beneath, while rippled water and scattered pebbles form a textured background.
