The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal found across rivers, lakes, and coastal areas throughout the UK and much of Europe. Once in decline due to pollution and habitat loss, populations have been steadily recovering in recent decades. Otters are well adapted to life in and around water, with dense, water-repellent fur, strong swimming ability, and a diet mainly consisting of fish, amphibians, and small aquatic animals.
Close to the water’s edge, the otter is shown with its head slightly raised, whiskers visible and damp fur catching the light. The rounded stones beneath the surface create a soft, patterned backdrop, while the shallow depth of field keeps the focus on the animal’s face and expression.
