The Square of the Hebrew Martyrs is located in La JuderÃa, the historic Jewish quarter of Rhodes, at the junction of Pindarou and Dorieos streets. It was officially named in 1946 by Mayor Gabriel Haritos to honour the Jewish residents of Rhodes and Kos who were murdered during the Holocaust. Historical records show that on 23 July 1944, German forces deported 1,604 Jewish men, women and children from the two islands. According to the Jewish Museum of Rhodes, only 151 survived. In the centre of the square stands a circular fountain decorated with three seahorses, installed during the Italian administration of Rhodes (1912-1943) as a replacement for an older Ottoman fountain. On 23 July 2002, a marble Holocaust memorial was unveiled here to mark the 58th anniversary of the deportation. The monument bears the words 'Never forget' in six languages - Greek, English, Hebrew, French, Italian and Ladino - reflecting the multicultural life of the community before the war. The square is a short walk from the Kahal Shalom Synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue in Greece, built in 1577.
