The Plaka Forest on Kos is known for its dappled light, whispering pines - and its entirely unexpected population of wild peacocks. No one really knows how they got there (rumour has it they were introduced by monks or dropped off by someone with very flamboyant taste in birds), but they've made themselves completely at home. You'll find them strutting through clearings, roosting in trees, or just casually blocking your path like feathered traffic wardens. Male peacocks with their shimmering blues and greens are hard to miss, but the white (technically leucistic) ones look like something from a fairy tale. And the chicks? All legs and fluff. They're skittish but curious, and if you catch one looking right at you - well, you've been chosen. Sort of.
