The medieval walls that encircle Rhodes Old Town stretch roughly 4 km and were constructed over several centuries, starting in antiquity and substantially rebuilt by the Knights Hospitaller between about 1457 and 1465 under Grand Master Antonio Fluvian de Riviere. They were erected upon earlier Byzantine fortifications that had survived the siege of Demetrius Poliorcetes in 305 BC and were rebuilt following the earthquake of 226 BC.
By the late medieval period, the walls boasted 11 gates - including Gate d'Amboise (completed in 1512 under Grand Master Emery d'Amboise), the St Athanasius Gate (1441-1442), and Marine Gate - alongside numerous bastions and towers assigned to different knightly 'langues' of the Order. The walls withstood Mamluk attacks in 1444 and a massive Ottoman siege in 1480 before finally falling in 1522 after a sustained six-month campaign.
Taken while strolling along the moat, my photograph focuses on a large rounded tower near the medieval moat theater, standing quietly behind stretches of defensive wall. The sun brings out the soft tones in the stone and highlights the plants clinging to the cracks and ledges. The curved pathway gives the whole image flow, while the architecture keeps it grounded. A great choice for anyone who loves old-world structures and timeless textures.
