The moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) is one of the most widely distributed jellyfish species, found throughout the world’s oceans and commonly present in UK coastal waters. Known for its translucent, dome-shaped bell, it typically grows to around the size of a dinner plate. Like all jellyfish, it is composed of around 95% water and lacks a brain, blood, and heart, drifting with ocean currents as it feeds on plankton and other small organisms.
Rendered in monochrome, the jellyfish appears suspended against a deep black background, its smooth bell softly illuminated while long, trailing tentacles extend downward in fine, fluid strands. The absence of colour emphasises form and texture, creating a clean, almost sculptural quality. Each canvas is stretched over a solid wooden frame made from European kiln-dried knotless pine. The stretcher bars are milled with a curved profile that minimises contact with the canvas surface, helping to prevent impression marks and allowing the artwork to remain smooth and evenly tensioned.
The frame features finger-jointed corners to maintain structural strength and resist warping over time. For larger sizes, discreet tensioning wedges are added to the corners, allowing the canvas to remain taut and making future adjustment possible if required.
Every canvas is hand finished by experienced framers, ensuring clean folds and precise stretching on each corner. The 38mm deep frame gives the artwork a strong wall presence, while a choice of black, white or image wrap edges allows the final presentation to suit your space.
Stretched canvases are designed to hang directly from the wooden stretcher frame, allowing the artwork to sit flush against the wall for a clean, gallery-style finish. Simply place a nail or screw into the wall and rest the frame over it. For larger canvases, two fixings positioned either side of the centre stretcher bar provide additional stability.
