The chaffinch is one of Britain’s most widespread and familiar finches, commonly seen in gardens, woodland edges and farmland hedgerows. The female’s plumage is softer and more understated than the male’s, with warm brown tones and subtle wing markings that provide excellent camouflage among branches and leaf litter. Though less brightly coloured, she shares the same confident presence and clear call that make the species so recognisable.
