Just outside Salen on the Isle of Mull, two derelict fishing boats - Pavonia (built in Banff, 1955) and Elsie May (a prawn boat from Oban, late 1960s) - linger on the shoreline, abandoned when restoration plans fell through in the 1970s. A local reportedly acquired them for salvage but later abandoned the idea [TravelGumbo]. These haunting relics have weathered into silent, photogenic sculptures against the backdrop of the Sound of Mull, just a short drive from Craignure en route to Tobermory [TravelGumbo, Wikipedia]. Locals call it a photographer’s right-of-way - magical in the right light, but fading forever under the elements [TravelGumbo].
The closer view of my photograph brings you into the woodwork itself – the grain, the rust, the flaking paint. There’s something raw and tactile here, especially with the shadowed treatment pulling out every detail. For anyone drawn to ruin and texture, this one has a quiet power.
