Inside St Martin’s Church in Burton Agnes, the table tomb of Sir Walter Griffith, who died in 1487, is adorned with a dense arrangement of carved skulls and bones. This form of decoration reflects the medieval concept of memento mori, a reminder of mortality intended to encourage reflection on faith and the transient nature of life. Such imagery was often incorporated into church monuments of the late 15th century, combining skilled craftsmanship with symbolic meaning that would have been widely understood at the time.
