Cockle shells are a familiar sight along sandy shores around the UK, particularly on tidal beaches where they are uncovered and scattered by the movement of the sea. These small, ridged shells come from edible bivalve molluscs that live just beneath the surface, emerging or being exposed as tides shift the sand. Beaches marked with bird footprints often indicate feeding grounds, where shorebirds search for shellfish such as cockles, leaving behind a pattern of tracks that quickly fade with the next tide.
An open cockle shell rests in the sand, its curved halves slightly parted. Around it, scattered bird footprints create a natural pattern across the surface, while soft light brings out the fine textures of the sand and shell.
