Ardvreck Castle stands on a small rocky promontory on the shores of Loch Assynt in the north-west Highlands of Scotland, close to the village of Lairg. Built in the late 15th century by the MacLeods of Assynt, the castle later became linked with one of the most famous episodes in Highland history when the defeated Marquis of Montrose was betrayed and captured here in 1650. Today the roofless ruin remains one of Scotland’s most strikingly placed castles, surrounded by wild landscapes and the quiet waters of the loch.
