The medieval walls that encircle Rhodes Old Town stretch roughly 4 km and were constructed over several centuries, starting in antiquity and substantially rebuilt by the Knights Hospitaller between about 1457 and 1465 under Grand Master Antonio Fluvian de Riviere (Rodos Guide). They were erected upon earlier Byzantine fortifications that had survived the siege of Demetrius Poliorcetes in 305 BC and were rebuilt following the earthquake of 226 BC (Wikipedia).
By the late medieval period, the walls boasted 11 gates - including Gate d’Amboise (completed in 1512 under Grand Master Emery d’Amboise), the St Athanasius Gate (1441-1442), and Marine Gate - alongside numerous bastions and towers assigned to different knightly “langues” of the Order (Rodos Guide, Wikipedia). The walls withstood Mamluk attacks in 1444 and a massive Ottoman siege in 1480 before finally falling in 1522 after a sustained six-month campaign (Rodos Guide, Wikipedia).
Taken while strolling along the moat, my photograph captures a strong central view of one of the fortress towers, framed by solid stone walls and rugged landscape. The pathway leading in gives the whole scene a sense of purpose – as if you could walk right up and be transported to another time. With the stonework glowing under that blue sky, it's a striking piece for anyone drawn to ancient places and powerful shapes.

Absolutely wonderful photo! I bought it for my grandson but my daughter loved it so much that we decided it would be a waste to put it on his bedroom wall. The quality and detail demands a place where everyone can see it. I would definitely recommend this to family and friends. Thank you for the quick delivery too!
