The town developed during the 18th and 19th centuries as a small fishing and trading port before growing into an important transport hub for the Hebrides. Its waterfront is lined with Victorian and later buildings that climb the hillside above the bay, while McCaig’s Tower stands prominently on the skyline overlooking the harbour.
