Dunure Castle stands on the Ayrshire coast in south-west Scotland, overlooking the Firth of Clyde near the small harbour village of Dunure. The castle dates largely from the 15th and 16th centuries and was once a stronghold of the powerful Kennedy family, Earls of Cassillis. Its dramatic coastal position made it both a defensive site and a symbol of authority along this stretch of the Scottish coastline.
In this photograph, the ruined stone walls of the castle sit on open grassland above the sea, with the wide horizon of the Firth of Clyde stretching out behind it. The remaining towers and broken walls reveal the structure’s age while the surrounding coastline and distant landforms frame the historic ruin.
