The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is a defining species of the Scottish Highlands, commonly found across landscapes such as Torridon in the Northwest Highlands. These areas provide a mix of woodland cover and open grazing, supporting healthy populations of deer that have long been part of the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Male deer, known as stags or harts, are recognised by their antlers, which are regrown annually and covered in velvet during the growth phase.
A stag lies partially concealed within dense bracken, its body low to the ground while its head is raised and turned slightly to one side.
