The Plaka Forest on Kos is known for its dappled light, whispering pines - and its entirely unexpected population of wild peacocks. No one really knows how they got there (rumour has it they were introduced by monks or dropped off by someone with very flamboyant taste in birds), but they've made themselves completely at home. You'll find them strutting through clearings, roosting in trees, or just casually blocking your path like feathered traffic wardens. Male peacocks with their shimmering blues and greens are hard to miss, but the white (technically leucistic) ones look like something from a fairy tale.
This male peacock was mid-strut, sunlight catching his brilliant blue head and the flickers of orange in his wings. With more birds blurred in the background and trees lining the edge of the clearing, it felt like a small royal procession. That eye contact says it all: he knows exactly how good he looks.
