South Wheal Frances is a former copper and tin mine on the Great Flat Lode, just south of Camborne, Cornwall, and was the largest of the four setts that eventually amalgamated under the umbrella of Basset Mines Ltd.
Mining began in the local area in the early 1720s and by the early 20th century, several thousand men, women, bal maidens and children worked in the mine, however a slump in tin prices during World War I led to the mine's closure in 1918. Once part of a network of mines that shaped the Cornish landscape and economy, the remaining engine houses and chimneys now stand as reminders of 19th-century mining activity. These structures were built to house steam engines used for pumping water and raising ore from deep underground.
Set against a cloudy sky, the engine house and chimney rise above dense vegetation in a monochrome composition. The surrounding foliage forms a textured foreground, while the building sits slightly elevated, drawing attention to its form. The frame features finger-jointed corners to maintain structural strength and resist warping over time. For larger sizes, discreet tensioning wedges are added to the corners, allowing the canvas to remain taut and making future adjustment possible if required.
Every canvas is hand finished by experienced framers, ensuring clean folds and precise stretching on each corner. The 38mm deep frame gives the artwork a strong wall presence, while a choice of black, white or image wrap edges allows the final presentation to suit your space.
Stretched canvases are designed to hang directly from the wooden stretcher frame, allowing the artwork to sit flush against the wall for a clean, gallery-style finish. Simply place a nail or screw into the wall and rest the frame over it. For larger canvases, two fixings positioned either side of the centre stretcher bar provide additional stability.
