Built in the late 13th century by the powerful Maxwell family, who held it for over 400 years, it served as a key border stronghold near the Solway Firth, enduring repeated sieges during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Its most famous moment came in 1300 when Edward I of England besieged it with a vast army, only to find a mere 60 defenders inside; the event was immortalised in a poetic French roll of arms.
Surrounded by a broad moat and set amid a national nature reserve teeming with wildlife, it stands today as a romantic ruin blending military might with Renaissance elegance.

Absolutely wonderful photo! I bought it for my grandson but my daughter loved it so much that we decided it would be a waste to put it on his bedroom wall.
