Whitby Abbey, perched dramatically on the windswept cliffs above the North Sea, is one of England's most atmospheric and historically significant monastic ruins.
Founded in 657 by the Anglo-Saxon princess St Hild as a double monastery for monks and nuns, it became a centre of early Christian learning and hosted the famous Synod of Whitby in 664, which decided the date of Easter for the English Church.
Destroyed by Viking raids, rebuilt in the Norman period, and finally dissolved in 1539 under Henry VIII, its striking Gothic remains inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula, with Count Dracula arriving in England as a black dog leaping from a shipwrecked vessel below these very cliffs.
Today, the skeletal silhouette of the great east window stands as an enduring symbol of faith, power, and Gothic romance against the wild Yorkshire coast.
This evocative image captures the ruins of Whitby Abbey bathed in the warm glow of sunset, its Gothic arches and spires silhouetted against a clear blue sky tinged with fading light.
The golden hues of the tall grass in the foreground echo the amber tones of the setting sun, creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture.
The abbey’s weathered stone stands as a solemn reminder of centuries past, while the tranquil atmosphere invites reflection.
It’s a hauntingly beautiful scene that speaks to the enduring presence of history in the heart of Yorkshire’s coastal landscape.

I'm absolutely made up with the print I received from Real World Art. I went for the Koi Carp image - It's very evocative and they've totally captured the serenity you feel watching Koi. You can almost hear the babbling water! What's more, it's a top quality print, pin-sharp and looks great framed up. Couldn't recommend them any higher.. lovely to deal with.. thank you.
