The Plaka Forest on Kos is known for its dappled light, whispering pines - and its entirely unexpected population of wild peacocks. No one really knows how they got there (rumour has it they were introduced by monks or dropped off by someone with very flamboyant taste in birds), but they've made themselves completely at home. You'll find them strutting through clearings, roosting in trees, or just casually blocking your path like feathered traffic wardens. Male peacocks with their shimmering blues and greens are hard to miss, but the white (technically leucistic) ones look like something from a fairy tale.
In a sun-dappled forest floor of twigs and gold, this white peacock turned its head to look back, eye locked on mine. The elegant curve of its neck, soft feather texture and pure, white tones made the whole scene feel dreamlike. There's a gentleness here - and also a sense of quiet awareness. A beautiful, otherworldly image for any nature lover.
